Editor’s Note

Dear Friend,

Welcome to the July, 2014 edition of the ISEC eNewsletter.

The ISEC Space Elevator Conference is only a few weeks away!  Interest is running high, papers are being submitted at a rapid rate and this promises to be one of the best conferences ever.  It's still not too late to Register.

In this issue's President's Corner, ISEC President Dr. Peter Swan challenges all of us to be Champions of the concept of a Space Elevator - talking up the idea at local gatherings you might be aware of - and offering presentation help you can use.

This issue also has a snapshot of the preliminary conference schedule and an article about the Heinlein Society's new space elevator poster.

This will be the last eNewsletter issued before the Conference - we'll send out a summary one once the Conference is complete.

Please don’t forget to LIKE US on Facebook, FOLLOW US on Twitter, and enjoy the photos and videos that we’ve posted on Flickr and YouTube, all under our Social Identity of ISECdotORG.

Thank you!

President's Corner

ISEC Role as the Champion for Space Elevators.

The web defines champion as:  "someone who fights or speaks publicly in support of a person, belief, cause, etc."  However, I like the approach of using it as a verb:  "to fight or speak publicly in support of..." We should be thinking about our role inside ISEC and around the world. We should be thinking of public speaking in support of our belief that the space elevator will be there; and, that it can provide a phenomenal capability for safe, inexpensive, and routine access to space.  We should be the champions for space elevators.

Our conference, 22-24 Aug, is coming up and we will all be discussing space elevators.  These conferences are a fantastic way to keep our "touchstones" near and our topics active.  Both of these are extremely fortunate.  I feel privileged to have such great people supporting ISEC and the yearly conference - thanks Bryan, Ted, and especially David.  However, we need to step out and reach to local opportunities for discussions with the public.  I have recently had opportunities to talk about our space elevator projects to AIAA, IAA, IAF, NSS and SEDS local chapters.  I suggest that each of you think about the opportunities around your areas.  If you would like support in presentation materials, I have plenty and would love to supply a power point set you could alter to your needs [just email me at pete.swan@isec.org].  See you at the conference, I hope!

"Keep Climbing my Friends!"
Pete Swan

  • Low Frequency Radio Power for Climbers and Van Allen Belt Remediation

  • The Space Elevator in the Earth's Atmosphere

  • ISEC Research Activities

  • Weather Support to the Space Elevator Program

  • For space elevator rope: Production of exfoliated graphene and high surface charged-cellulose nanocrystals as stabilizer synthesized by lyophilized acidic hydrolysis

  • JSEA Outreach efforts and potential Business collaboration

  • Effects of Electric Propulsion on Carbon Nano Tube Material

  • CNT Technology Progress at Odysseus Technologies

Workshops to include:

  • Space Elevator Architectures and Roadmaps

  • History of the Space Elevator

And don't forget, science author Leonard David will be the Keynote speaker at the Conference on Friday morning.  His observations and insights will be sure to please...

It's going to be a great conference - see you there!

NSS to attend to attend this year's ISEC Space Elevator Conference

As we supported the National Space Society's conference in May [International Space Development Conference], they will be at our conference in August.

The name of the local NSS chapter is "NSS Seattle."

This is an excellent example of the relationship between Affiliate Societies.  We look forward to sharing our activities with others who also believe in commercial expansion into space.

A Space Elevator Poster...

The Heinlein Society has prepared a series of four 8-foot long posters to be displayed at various events.

One of the banners features the space elevator and prominently mentions ISEC - thank you Heinlein Society!

These new educational banners will be used for display to students and the public.  The first use will be at Moon Day in Dallas, then at Newspace in California.

As mentioned in the poster, the Heinlein Society is also the publisher of the recent IAA Study on Space Elevators, a study that concluded that Space Elevators indeed ARE feasible and a way forward for the commercial development of space.
