International Astronautical Congress ISEC presentations, Dubai, October 2021

The presentations at the conference were not recorded, but the IAC requested short pre-conference videos of accepted papers and those are presented here.

Space Elevators: The Green Road to Space. Presentation by Jerry K. Eddy, Ph.D. [7 min.]

After an 18-month technical study, "Space Elevators are the Green Road to Space" is now available. This report considered the environmental impact of all aspects of Space Elevators: construction, operation and how it could improve the Earth’s environment. In consideration of improving the Earth’s environment, the following were considered: space solar power, permanent disposal of high-level nuclear waste, Sun Earth L-1 solar shade, setting up highly polluting necessary industries at GEO and the impact of dual space access architecture.

Architecture Engineering and the Galactic Harbour. Presentation by Michael Fitzgerald and Peter Swan, Ph.D. [10 min.]

This paper looks at Architectural Engineering as a discipline and shows its strengths for producing developmental roadmaps. Space Elevators are shown as being in a sequence, or flow, of development. This explains how the design of Space Elevators has moved past the preliminary technological readiness assessment and is ready to initiate segment level testing towards engineering validations.

Climate Action and Growing Electricity Demand. Presentation by David L. Dotson, Ph.D. [10 min.]

A space elevator (SE) development program like that proposed by the International Space Elevator Consortium (ISEC) offers an alternative delivery mechanism for scaling Space Solar Power (SSP) beyond 2050, hedging the risk of reliance on a single delivery system while reducing the time required for large-scale SSP deployment. To de-risk possible futures in which SSP is a major part of the global energy mix this century, a dual space access architecture is proposed, leveraging the strengths of heavy launch and SEs together. Such an architecture would secure the future for green energy on Earth, in 2050 and beyond.

Visions of Many Demand Space Elevators Start NOW! Presentation by Peter Swan, Ph.D. [15 min.]

Space Elevator development must be started immediately for three critical reasons: 1) the promises of Space Elevators are so revolutionary 2) we can now build an Earth Space Elevator as the tether material will be available for construction, and 3) Space Elevators are essential to the future of mankind. The Space Elevator community, with its large body of knowledge researched and collected over the past 23 years (1998-2021), has concluded: "We should start today and move Space Elevators into Engineering Development with segment level testing." As such, the community has announced: Earth Space Elevators are ready to start engineering development now!

Secondary Tethers. Presentation by John Knapman, Ph.D. [1 min.]

The space elevator enables fast interplanetary travel with fuel and reaction mass only needed for course correction and deceleration. The velocity of the apex anchor 100,000km from Earth is 7.7km/s. Secondary tethers rotating about the primary tether enable even higher velocities up to 17km/s, allowing transits to Mars in as little as 60 days and to the outer planets in very short times compared to today’s technology. Furthermore they enable complete flexibility over the direction of launch, even to objects outside the solar system.
